Tutorial: Layered Disc Ornament

The 26-Day Christmas Craft Marathon has begun!!  Let's get to today's tutorial!!

Yesterday, I posted a tutorial on how to make a (nearly) perfect accordion-folded disc.  Now, I'll explain how to use those paper discs to make these adorable Christmas Ornaments and show a few other versions too!!

Step 1: GATHER SUPPLIES
- Book page(s) or sheet music
- Burlap
- 4"-6" Hemp/Jute cord (thin)
- Cardstock (2 colors)
- Glue (I used Aleene's Fast Grab Tacky Glue)
- Fabric/paper flower(s)
- Plastic gem

Step 2: MAKE BURLAP LAYER
Trace & Glue
Trace a circle on to the burlap.  The circle should be the size you want your ornament to be.
Place a ring of glue about 1/3"-1/2" away from the edge.
Cut & Attach Back
Wait for the glue to dry.
Cut out your circle of burlap.
Attach a smaller circle of cardstock to the same side as the ring of glue.
Fray & Trim
Remove any strands that would eventually fall off.
Don't worry, the glue ring you added earlier will prevent the burlap from fraying too far!!
"Fluff up" the rest of the edges as shown in the photo above.
Trim your circle back into a circle when you've finished.

Step 3: ADD PAPER DISC
Following the instructions in the (Nearly) Perfect Accordion-Folded Disc, make a paper disc.
Glue the the finished disc to the center of the burlap.

Step 4: ATTACH LOOP
Thread the ends of the hemp/jute cording through holes in the burlap (going from the front towards the back) as shown above.
Glue ends to the cardboard backing of your burlap disc.

Step 5: ADD FLOWER CENTER
Make Flower Center
Cut a circle slightly bigger than your flower out of cardstock.
Glue each layer together one-by-one from largest to smallest and finally adding the gem on top
Note: I placed my gem inside a wooden button to frame the gem.

Attach Flower Center
Glue the back of your flower center to the front of the paper disc, making sure it is centered on the ornament.

FINISHED!!

VERSIONS

Version 1
Instead of burlap, I made a brown cardstock paper disc with roughly torn edges for the back layer.
The center has a gold-painted wooden star attached to a cardboard-backed circle of felt.
A little bell tied onto hemp was added for a small embellishment.

Version 2
This one also has a cardboard-backed circle of felt with a star in the center, but this star was painted with a single layer of brown acrylic paint so the woodgrain would show through.
The back simply a circle of cardstock and cardboard with ruffled lace added to the outside edge.

Version 3
Again, I used an accordion-folded piece of (red) cardstock for the back layer.
The center is a circle of brown cardstock, a small paper cut-out, and a glass pebble added to the top.

I really hope you enjoyed this tutorial and the variations I showed you!! If you make an ornament based off this tutorial, I would love to see photos of your creations!!

Thanks for reading!!  Until next time...
